Mama Kelly’s New Year Resolutions

It’s that time of year again.  This year I have tried to focus on smaller more easily attainable goals.  I have also tailored them not so much to what I think I should do but the things that I think will actually help me be healthier, happier and saner.

My resolutions could be put into two simple categories:

  • Getting my house in order – physically, situationally, and financially
  • Living more of a Witchy life

I have thoughts on how to attain these goals.  I have steps I plan to take.  How much of this I share here I have yet to decide.  Yes I want to be accountable, but at the same time my first steps out of the mire and muck of my current life situation will be fraught with fear and insecurity.

I wish you luck in terms of your own resolutions for the New Year.

I wish you all a year full of pleasant surprises and unexpected blessings.

I wish for all of us that 2009 will be a year in which peace and hope reign, however unrealistic that wish may be.

Blessings

Pray to Whoever You Want To

Pray to whoever you kneel down to:
Jesus nailed to his wooden or marble or plastic cross,
his suffering face bent to kiss you,
Buddha still under the Bo tree in scorching heat,
Adonai, Allah, raise your arms to Mary
that she may lay her palm on our brows,
to Shekinhah, Queen of Heaven and Earth,
to Inanna in her stripped descent.

Hawk or Wolf, or the Great Whale, Record Keeper
of time before, time now, time ahead, pray. Bow down
to terriers and shepherds and siamese cats.
Fields of artichokes and elegant strawberries.

Pray to the bus driver who takes you to work,
pray on the bus, pray for everyone riding that bus
and for everyone riding buses all over the world.
If you haven’t been on a bus in a long time,
climb the few steps, drop some silver, and pray.

Waiting in line for the movies, for the ATM,
for your latté and croissant, offer your plea.
Make your eating and drinking a supplication.
Make your slicing of carrots a holy act,
each translucent layer of the onion, a deeper prayer.

Make the brushing of your hair
a prayer, every strand its own voice,
singing in the choir on your head.
As you wash your face, the water slipping
through your fingers, a prayer: Water,
softest thing on earth, gentleness
that wears away rock.

Making love, of course, is already a prayer.
Skin and open mouths worshipping that skin,
the fragile case we are poured into,
each caress a season of peace.

If you’re hungry, pray. If you’re tired.
Pray to Gandhi and Dorothy Day.
Shakespeare. Sappho. Sojourner Truth.
Pray to the angels and the ghost of your grandfather.

When you walk to your car, to the mailbox,
to the video store, let each step
be a prayer that we all keep our legs,
that we do not blow off anyone else’s legs.
Or crush their skulls.
And if you are riding on a bicycle
or a skateboard, in a wheel chair, each revolution
of the wheels a prayer that as the earth revolves
we will do less harm, less harm, less harm.

And as you work, typing with a new manicure,
a tiny palm tree painted on one pearlescent nail
or delivering soda or drawing good blood
into rubber-capped vials, writing on a blackboard
with yellow chalk, twirling pizzas, pray for peace.

With each breath in, take in the faith of those
who have believed when belief seemed foolish,
who persevered. With each breath out, cherish.

Pull weeds for peace, turn over in your sleep for peace,
feed the birds for peace, each shiny seed
that spills onto the earth, another second of peace.
Wash your dishes, call your mother, drink wine.

Shovel leaves or snow or trash from your sidewalk.
Make a path. Fold a photo of a dead child
around your VISA card. Gnaw your crust
of prayer, scoop your prayer water from the gutter.
Mumble along like a crazy person, stumbling
your prayer through the streets.

pray for peace – ellen bass

For Time on My Hands

Happiness be the lot of him who works
for the happiness of others.
May the Lord grant him health and endurance.

gathas of zarathushtra – yasna 43:1 – ±1700 bce.

I am grateful for a holiday free of conflict, ire, or angst.

I am grateful for being able to give my children many of the items they wanted this year and the happy shouts the opening of said items inspired.

I am grateful for having the opportunity to visit with 3 friends in the past 8 days.

I am grateful for my father’s generosity that will allow me to go to school this semester.  One class at a time may take me an eternity to graduate but it is better than doing nothing at all.

I am grateful, or more accurately I am trying to be, for the opportunity that the loss of my extra porject at work represents.  I will have a regular 2-day weekend again, something I haven’t had consistently for over a year.  I am hoping that it will allow me the time to get my house in order, my life in order, fill my soul back up, and even work on some creative projects that I have long hoped to complete.

A Brief Recap of the Holiday

What a busy couple of days!!!  As I told you, I started off the week sick.  Because of taking a half day on Monday and my refusal to go in to work today out of a need to simply have some R&R, I will wind up short on hours this week as a result, and can only hope that I am able to “make it up” a little bit this week with my last hurrah on my comission-based side project.

We spent Xmas Eve at my cousin’s house and it was a relaxing evening.  The kids had a lovely time and my favorite part as always is not having to cook or clean up.  We got home close to midnight, tucked the kids in bed, and did the last minute Santa scurry – pulling presents out of the attic and filling stockings.

The morning dawned early and the presents were all opened by 10:30.  Santa was kind to each one of us, and my favorite gifts were my father giving me the money to take a college class this semester and my hubby having our wedding video (which we’ve never watched due to the format it was recorded on) moved to a DVD.  If I can figure out how to edit out a snippet of it I will upload it to Youtube.

By 4pm that day my dear friend “M” was over and we were eating dinner.  I served a spiral ham w/ raisin gravy, mashed potatoes, candied carrots, green bean almondine, sauteed mushrooms, and cheesy breaded cauliflower.  Everything came out wonderful and was heartily enjoyed by all.

The following day was Miss Artistic’s 14th birthday and the highlight of the day for her was opening her gifts (of course) including a really HOT bag from her Auntie “E” and a gift from us that I hope will earn me her favor for at least a week or two – a drawing tablet.  We were also treated out to dinner by Mr. Grumpy and had a wonderful meal at the local Chinese restaurant.

This morning our dear friend “M” left for home and a couple of hours later another friend “M2″ stopped by for a brief holiday visit.  I served her a lunch of Xmas leftovers with home-baked cookies for dessert and we sat and played Harry Potter Clue.  A fun, novel, if convoluted take on the classic game.

The evening is earmarked for watching episodes of Lost with the hubby and trying to forget that I have work tomorrow.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!!!

The Day Before Christmas

‘Twas three days past Solstice

and one thing was clear

Sweet Goddess!  Christmas!

It’s practically here

The children are snuggled

all warm in their beds

While Mommy heads off to

the job that she dreads

GamerDude is asnooze

but there’s work to be done

the last round of wrapping

must soon be begun

But everything’s purchased

or en route from the store

from toys to food

no wonder I’m poor

Tomorrow will be over

in a flash of bright paper

I hope I pull off

this Holiday caper

I’m hoping for smiles

I’m aiming for glee

But I’ll be happy

“so long as we have we”*

May you and yours

be richly blessed

with all you desire

from this year till next.

Yule Gifts

One of the nice moments during our visit with our time with our friend “E” was the exchanging of gifts.

Our gift to her was themed as a night of relaxation.  We gave her Loreena McKennitt’s newest CD – A Midwinter Night’s Dream, a Foot Spa with Bubbles and Massage, a bottle of mead from our trip to Faire, as well as a Santa mug and a few packages of flavored cocoas.  As always I wish I had been able to do more as “E” always spoils us terribly.

We received a lovely Tree of Life inspired pottery tea light holder and a framed and matted photo that “E” took of Stonehenge.  I swear that that photo made all the hairs on my arms stand on end.  Not only is it a beautiful shot, but knowing that it was taken by my friend makes the magic seem all the more tangible.

The girls received small treats and treasures from the UK including really pretty tins filled with toffee as well as gift cards to their favorite stores – GameStop and Claire’s.  My dad received some coffee in addition to a shipment of Omaha steaks that arrived a few days ahead of “E”‘s visit.  In addition I received a gorgeous Indian cookbook (Complete Book of Indian Cooking: 350 Recipes from the Regions of India) and a collection of traditional spices that smell SOOOO good and GamerDude received two writing books to inspire him to resume work on a novel he’s been toying with.

Of course my favorite gift was simply having her her with us.  I worked her hard.  We spent too much time baking.  Next time I think we’ll devote one day to baking and another day to just visiting.  But, having a friend who accepts my faith, even if she doesn’t share it, and being willing to celebrate it with me was simply a delight.

It looks like I’m going to have to start shopping much sooner in 2009 to try and spoil her the way she deserves.  Of course, first, I have to come up with a suitable theme ….. hmmm …. this will take some thought.

Blessings

Almost Ready for Xmas

The weekend was wonderful, although exhausting.  We didn’t get to do everything we planned on as we sort of overdid it with the baking (we wound up making 8 kinds of cookies and “E” whipped up a birthday cake for Miss Artistic’s quickly appraching 14th birthday.) and Princess Nibbles was sick all weekend.  We had wanted to go out to look at holiday lights, we had wanted to go out to a movie, neither happened.  We spent over an hour forcing Miss Artistic to do some much needed studying (she had several tests today) and watched The Year Without a Santa Claus with Princess Nibbles.  Overall, there was much laughter and together time and I already miss my friend.

Unfortunately our Solstice weekend (which I hope becomes an annual tradition) ended on a sour note as both my friend “E” and I seem to have caught the bug that kept Miss Artistic out of school last week and kept Princess Nibbles on the couch all day Saturday.  As for myself I was up nearly all night expelling pure evil and was, by this morning, totally wiped out.

As I’ve mentioned before my employer does not see fit to provide paid time off in any form and so I forced myself to go to work for 5 hours as I couldn’t afford to take the whole day.  I was miserable the whole time and was never so grateful to be home as when I crawled under many blankets and slept on and off for 2.5 hours.  Of course it was worse for my friend who had to get up this morning and drive for almost 4 hours before having the ability to do the same.

During my time asnooze GamerDude did a bunch of wrapping and even ran out and mailed our holiday cards.  I am so grateful for that!!  We are close to being “done” for the holidays although tomorrow I am going to have to run out and pick up some last minute items – gift cards, PJs for Princess Nibbles, etc.

Currently I am sitting on the couch and sipping tea – which is all my stomach seems willing to tolerate – and even that is an effort.

Here’s hoping that you and yours are enjoying the holiday season.

Blessings

Joyous Yule

Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Don we now our gay apparel,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Troll the ancient Yule tide carol,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

See the blazing Yule before us,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Strike the harp and join the chorus.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Follow me in merry measure,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
While I tell of Yule tide treasure,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Fast away the old year passes,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Sing we joyous, all together,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Heedless of the wind and weather,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

May your holiday be filled with joy

May your season be blessed
