Bat Bones and Ergot and Rites, Oh My!

I was planning on watching the recent “The Witch in the Wardrobe” episode of Bones and writing a long and drawn out response to and analysis of it.  But Jason over at The Wild Hunt summed it up so well that instead I will simply share my thoughts and feelings.

My family and I love the show Bones.  I love the characters, I love the whole crime drama aspect, I love the comedic moments. Despite this, I knew based on the previews that odds were I was not going to enjoy the episode very much.  I knew going in that I was either going to be annoyed at the portrayal of Paganism or downright furious.

Allow me to say simply that the show lived up to my low expectations.  Considering the cast of characters are supposed to (for the most part) be intelligent, educated, and worldly I found myself amazed at how often the Wiccans were mocked or made fun of.

Aside from that though I was disappointed that once again Wiccan practice was portrayed as something totally “out there.”  While I understand the need for shock value as a marketing tool or as a ratings booster I am frankly tired, after all this time, that we have yet to see Wicca treated with the same respect afforded other faiths.

I came to Wicca at the age of 18 and have been following the path for over two decades.  Don’t get me wrong, I accept that some aspects of Wiccan practice can be construed as odd or even strange.  Circling skyclad beneath the full moon is not something that most people do.  But, never in the past 22 years did I come to use bat bones as a regular part of my practice.  And while I did once cast a circle by sprinkling cornmeal I cannot say that rye flour, or any other grain, has been “often used” in my rites.

Aside from Bones failing to portray my faith in other than the Hollywood version, I have a bone to pick with them about the science behind the solution to the crime itself.  In the end of the episode it is revealed that the entire Wiccan coven fell victim to ergotism when they attempted to cast a binding spell on an evil witch in their community.  Now since the rye flour was used to draw a circle around the “evil one’s” abode one can assume that they contracted it via inhalation.  Since the entire coven was revealed to have murdered the evil witch while all under the delusion that she was a demon this would mean that the entire coven inhaled the same dosage.  However, despite the fact that ergot poisoning causes a whole host of other symptoms including cramping, nausea, and muscle spasms the only affect seen was the group hallucination they experienced.

All in all not one of my favorite episodes and probably one that I will skip on watching again in the re-runs.

Avatar – go SEE the movie, definitely see it NOW

Don’t wait for it to come out on dvd, see it now and definitely see it on the IMAX 3d big screen if you can.  Don’t let anyone tell you much about it – just SEE it.

The special effects are awesome, the acting was first rate by a mostly unknown cast of actors, the story line well constructed and engaging - but it is so much more.   Just go and enjoy it, don’t over think it, just let yourself be immersed in the world and go along for the ride.

Avatar touched the very core of my wiccan\pagan soul.  I can’t really put into words the profound affect it had me.  Tears were freely running down my cheeks half way through the movie, by the end I was crying and even after the credits it took me a few more minutes before I was composed enough to walk to the car, and once in the car I cried a bit more.  There is one line in the movie that put me over the edge and tears just wouldn’t stop, even thinking about it makes my eyes fill up again with tears.  I had a similar response when I first watched the movie Dances With Wolves, and to this day I can’t watch more then a minute or two of that movie without getting all teary eyed.

In case you were wondering – I totally loved the movie Avatar.   Just go see it!   Every single person on the planet needs to see this movie.

Are You Ready for More Witches on Television?

I had a different video picked for this week’s Pagan Video Tuesday feature. But I stumbled on this preview of a new show set to air on ABC this fall here in the States and wanted to be able to highlight this in a timely fashion.  And while I enjoyed the movie upon which it is based, Eastwick looks like it may follow the theme of Witches being associated with Satan.

“In the seaside village of Eastwick, three very different women are about to discover some bewitching talents they never knew they had. And once they get together– watch out. Something wicked is coming their way.”

All I can hope is that they hold true to the spirit of the movie that I enjoyed, that the power these women had came from within themselves, from the union of friendship they shared, and not only allowed them to banish evil from their lives but stayed with them after it had departed.

It will be airing Wednesday, September 23 at 10:00 PM.  I plan to tune in, how can I not?  Anyone else planning on joining me?

Religulous – movie review

Religulous

The title says it all, Religion+ Ridiculous = Religulous.  It is a comedy, but also very informative.  It is sharp, intelligent, and thought provoking.

I’m a HUGE Bill Maher fan and totally LOVED this movie and I have been recommending it to everyone. Teacherman (hubby) and I saw it when it first came out last year and totally enjoyed it. I preordered the dvd as soon as it was available.   I brought it with me to my last visit with Mama Kelly a couple of weeks so we could all watch it together.

If you are a fan of Bill Maher you will love Religulous too. But any one with an open mind will also enjoy it.  You do not have to agree with Bill Maher and everything he says in order to like it.

If you agree that there definitely HAS to be separation of church and state, Religulous provides concrete information to reinforce why it is so important that we all fight to make sure that the church (any and all religions) stay out of government decision making  and political office.  This for me, was the most powerful message of the movie.

I recommend this movie very highly.  It can spark conversations and ignite thinking, which is definitely needed.

Bill Maher’s Religulous takes you on an unflinching, sometimes funny other times bewildering  and other times a bit frightening tour of many of the world’s religions.  ANY religion will look ridiculous when taken literally and as word-for-word fact with no regard for science or common sense, but it is exactly this kind of examination that is so deeply needed and I applaud Bill Maher for tackling this very “touchy” subject.

Bill Maher is not debating religion and he is not trying to convince anyone that religion is totally wrong.  However, the message of the film is going to be lost on the blind followers of any faith who never question and take religious text literally as fact.  What this film does say to the REST of us  is, it’s OK to say “I do not believe 100% of what religion says,” we can stop apologizing for thinking for ourselves, we can have faith in our personal lives but still think rationally and still recognize that science, education, and common sense have a place in our lives, our society, and our government.

As a Wiccan I know my “faith” is based on myth.  I am willing to accept that what I belief is NOT scientific and *gasp* may not even be true.  I believe in having a rich spiritual life, but I definitely would never ever use it in any way to dominate someone else or as a basis for anything to do with government laws or regulations.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who question nothing, demand that everyone else believe what they believe, and based on faith alone start wars, kill innocents, build empires that take money from their followers giving little back in return.

I highly recommend you make  up a big bowl of popcorn and enjoy the movie Religulous.  Or invite some friends over and have a little movie party.  Here’s some suggestions for some fun foods to have while watching:  deviled eggs, ambrosia, angel food cake, heavenly hash ice cream, pennies from heaven (a sliced carrot dish), an angel hair pasta dish (with shrimp and garlic is delicious).

Nature-Based, Pre-Christian Paganism – That’s Fantastic!

The above video is a brief 50 second clip from the movie “He’s Just Not That Into You” which shows Jennifer Aniston’s character sitting at a table at a party in which the man she meets identifies himself as “a Wiccan  … a male Witch”, reveals his magical name, and defines Wicca loosely as “a nature-based, pre-Christian religion.”  Her character Beth’s reaction is to mutter “yeah, that’s fantastic.”

I will say upfront that I have not seen this movie and I can’t say that I really intend to.  Not because of this scene, but because I rarely watch much in the way of “chick flicks” preferring instead to spend my TV time with GamerDude who, while a sensitive soul, isn’t about to endure 2 hours of watching women bemoan the lack of a lasting love relationship.

I will also admit, upfront, that I am easily annoyed at portrayals of Wicca in modern media.  I remember being more angry with The Craft for what it portrayed accurately than all of its misinformation as the former was what gave credibility to the latter.  More recently I was a bit miffed by the portrayal of a “killing curse” wielding Wiccan on the CBS show The Mentalist .

The above video is but a few brief seconds in a movie that most viewers, even fans of the movie, probably won’t even notice and almost certainly won’t remember for very long if they do.  But I still found it a bit unsettling.  Not so much Jennifer Aniston’s character Beth’s reaction to her table-mate’s revelation as by the portrayal of the Wiccan in question.

Those of my readers who are Wiccan, or some other Pagan persuasion, how likely would you be at a social function to jump right into identifying your faith right after introducing yourself for the first time?  How likely would you be to reveal your full magical or initiatory name (if you choose to use one) to someone you just met?  Would this be how you would want someone/anyone to hear about Wicca (or your own Pagan faith) for the first time – in an awkward oversharing moment?  Would you want this man, fictional though he is, to be the first Wiccan many Americans meet?Because according to a recent survery most of the United States has little to no idea of what Wicca is and what they do know, scares them?  Now, granted this survey was done by a Conversative Christian polling group but still …

Personally, I rarely identify myself as either a Wiccan or a Witch (unless asked a direct question) unless I know you to some degree.  I do not necessarily need to know you well or intimately but I need to have allowed you to already have gotten to know me a bit so that, whatever the word(s) evokes for you, this revelation will be weighed against what you have come to know about me as a person.  I hope that the impression I give is that perfectly average,  intelligent, kind almost 40 year olds are Wiccan too.

How do you feel about the portrayal?  How do you feel about Ms. Aniston’s character’s reaction? Please Let us know in the forum.

Blessings

13 Movie Quotes

Inspired by one of my favorite bloggers Fond of Snape, I share a list of 13 quotes from movies that I enjoy.  Your job, if you choose to accept it, is to try and guess the movies in the comments.  Once all the movies are guessed I will come back and fill-in the blanks.

* No Googling or using IMDB search functions.
* Leave your answer(s) in the comments.

  1. “Sat in that jail, I sat in that jail til I felt like I’s bout to rot to death. I know what it like to wanna go somewhere and cain’t. I know what it like to wanna sing… and have it beat out ‘ya.” (Congrats to Lisa for guessing The Color Purple
  2. “Sometimes it would stop raining long enough for the stars to come out… and then it was nice. It was like just before the sun goes to bed down on the bayou. There was always a million sparkles on the water” (Thanks Janet, you’re right this is from Forrest Gump)
  3. ” I have been and always shall be your friend.” (Hooray Journeywoman … yes this was on both Star Trek I and II, though I was personally thinking of The Wrath of Khan when I chose it
  4. “I have a hard time trusting people. I just never wanna jump unless I’m sure somebody’s gonna catch me. ”
Oh, I’ll catch you. And if I miss for any reason, I’ll sit by your bedside and nurse you back to health.”
  5. “It’ll be spring soon. And the orchards will be in blossom. And the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket. And they’ll be sowing the summer barley in the lower fields… and eating the first of the strawberries with cream. Do you remember the taste of strawberries?” (Right again Janet, this is The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King)
  6. “I could have got more out. I could have got more. I don’t know. If I’d just… I could have got more …. If I’d made more money… I threw away so much money. You have no idea. If I’d just…” (Yes, Journeywoman this was from Schindler’s List a movie that moved me more than I can ever put into words)
  7. “You’re the weak one. And you’ll never know love, or friendship. And I feel sorry for you.” (Kelly was the only one to get this one … Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  8. “Sometimes I think people don’t understand how lonely it is to be a kid, like you don’t matter.”
  9. “You humans are very curious to us. You invite us to live among you in an atmosphere of equality that we’ve never known before. You give us ownership of our own lives for the first time and you ask no more of us than you do of yourselves. I hope you understand how special your world is, how unique a people you humans are. Which is why it is all the more painful and confusing to us that so few of you seem capable of living up to the ideals you set for yourselves.”
  10. “Blue flower, red thorns. Blue flower, red thorns. Blue flower, red thorns. This would be so much easier if I wasn’t COLOR-BLIND.” (gdaybloke guessed correctly, it’s Shrek)
  11. “There are strange forces at work in your life. Magical ones that surround you. I don’t understand them, but they frighten me. You have given me my life. The truth is I can never repay you. I have no honor, and never will have. I don’t think you would kill me for being what I am, but better that than to return to Aquila.” (yes Journeywoman again! This is from Ladyhawke
  12. “God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need.” (a tie …. both Kelly and Laurie guessed this quote is from Fight Club)
  13. ” I believe in a long prolonged derangement of the senses to attain the unknown… Although I live in the subconscious, our pale reason hides the infinite from us.”

The Good Witch

A Review of The Good Witch – a Hallmark movie.  On a scale of one to 5, I will give this movie 4 broomsticks.

The Good Witch is a very sweet, enjoyable movie, definitely a fluff piece – but who doesn’t enjoy a nice movie you can just escape into that is “kid safe” to watch too.

The main character Cassie is lovely (no warts!), believeable and likeable.  And the “witchiness” is not over done, and all the mystery and magic isn’t explained away either.   She has a way with animals, an understanding of people, a mysterious past,  lives in a very cool old house and I wish there was a shop like hers in our town.

I felt that Hallmark did a very good job of portraying a witch, without incorporating a lot of unrealistic, over the top “tv magic”.

It will be on again this Friday (Jan. 25) night at 9 p.m. - so if you haven’t seen it yet, pop some popcorn, put the cauldron on simmer, and enjoy this delightful, feel good movie.

Morning Has Broken – Moving From Grief Into Joy

GamerDude and I pay an extra $10 a month in our cable bill to have DVR service. This allows us to record the shows we like and to watch them at a time that fits our schedule. With my juggling of work, school, and homework it is the only way I get to watch anything.

Recently we got caught up on some episodes of Pushing Daisies.  It is probably my favorite show on TV currently because it is sweet and funny and touching and silly all at once.  Also the use of color is really yummy.  It reminds me of the flashback scenes in Big Fish where everything is so bright and vivid it just pops off the screen with surrealism.

Anyway, in a recent episode one of the characters has a scene where she sings the song Morning Has Broken.  It is a scene in which she starts out singing softly and almost sadly and transitions into sheer joy.  It is a scene in which she is moving away from grief and back into living life again.

And yes I know it is a Christian hymn.  I sang it way back when … in 7th grade … when I was Confirmed.  And yes it is speaking to the God of the Old Testament and to the Garden of Eden but on a deeper level it speaks to me of each dawn being holy, each day being sacred.  When we wake up it is a fresh “new day with no mistakes in it yet.” (quoted from Anne of Green Gables)

While we watched it I just sat and cried.  I was able to push enough of it down to not sob but I couldn’t stop my eyes from streaming.  I do not know it is was the song itself, which never fails to move me, or the emotive power of Ellen Greene (who I loved in Little Shop of Horrors), or if my desire for a fresh new start all my own just crept out of the cracks in my soul for a moment.

In any case I share it with you here because it is beautiful and spiritual both.  It serves as a reminder that each moment of our lives can be treated as a blessing, can be treated with reverence, can be something we are grateful for.

Be advised that youtube has deleted the video that used to appear here.  I am so saddened by it because there is no describing the beauty of the scene … you just have to see it … or hear it ….

National Geographic – Taboo – Nudity – Witches Going Skyclad

Hubby and I recently watched an episode of the National Geographic series “Taboo” that we had saved on our DVR.  It was about Nudity, specifically being nude in a religious context.  One of the segments dealt with a coven of Australian Wiccans.I cringed at the sexual undertones in coven members undressing one another.  My first (and only) coven worked skyclad at esbat rites.  I can promise you that at no time did any of us undress one another except … later …. in our homes …. with our partners/lovers/mates.

I winced at a few wordings that I felt were poorly chosen.  One example was when the narrator made mention of stripping in front of strangers.  In my own experience skyclad rituals were not open to the public.  You did not work skyclad with a group unless you were an initiate which implied having known them and worked with them for a year and a day …. hardly strangers.

But I shuddered at the end when the narrator referred to Wicca as ….. a CULT ….. as opposed to just referring to it as a religion.  I was one very angry witch last night I can tell you that.

The Sopranos – Series Finale

Like millions of other suckers my husband and I sat down and watched the final episode of The Sopranos last night.  To say that I was disappointed is an understatement to say the least.  In fact, in our household it has been dubbed “the worst series finale EVER”.

Was it brilliant?  Possibly.  It certainly has people buzzing, and thinking, an awful lot about a TV show.

Was it well crafted?  Most definately.  It was an enthralling few minutes of TV, literally had my adrenaline buzzing.

Was it a let down?  Oh boy, you betcha!!

Don’t misunderstand me …. I “get” the ending.  They way we saw it, whether he “gets whacked” or goes to jail is for the most part irrelevant. Life goes on for Tony Soprano and his family (as I read SOMEWHERE) we just don’t get to watch anymore.

We assume that this time Tony will stand trial, we assume that Meadow will get married and become a lawyer, we assume that A.J. will continue to drift aimlessly while enjoying the “rich life”.

We assume that more people the Sopranos care for will die. We assume that they will live the rest of their lives in the knowledge that Tony will forever have a bullseye painted on his forehead.

We know that regardless of Tony’s ultimate fate that the Mob will continue.

Of course there is an alternate theory that the final black is Tony’s point of view, having been whacked. Especially as there are those who swear that the man in the Member’s Only Jacket who heads to the restroom is the nephew of Phil Leotardo (assassinated earlier in the episode). I tried to prove or disprove that theory using IMDB but the full cast list for the episode does not appear.

But, I don’t buy it. Mainly, because a) New York approved the hit and b) wouldn’t Tony have recognized him?

However, after watching on the edge of my seat for the last moments and getting nothing but a black screen I was let down.  Me.  One person.  A fan.

Personally I don’t care if it was a filmatic masterpiece that goes down in the annals of TV history.  In my opinion, it in no way compared to the last minutes of another favorite show, Six Feet Under, which took tying up loose ends to a new level.  It also moved me.  Something which the last season of the Sopranos failed to do.

Or even the first series finale I ever watched, MASH’s “Goodbye, Farewell & Amen

A Disappointed HBO Viewer
