Even More Harry Potter Party Plans

Category: Events & Outings | Written by Lady Rose

I hope you all don’t mind that our blog will be taken over by Harry Potter mania every so often for the next few months with the BIG Harry Potter Birthday Party I’m planning for May, and with the book and movie coming out in July and the fact that Mama Kelly and I are HUGE fans – but I promise to try and post about other things too (at least I’ll try hehehe).

As you know this weekend my family attended Princyclopedia 2007: Harry Potter – it was a huge event hosted by the Princeton University Library. And it was HUGE and wonderful!!!!! 30 tables with crafts and things to do – we started off with a taste of butterbeer and making an edible wand – dip preztel in chocolate with various things to roll it in shredded dragon skin, sun lava, etc., make a wizard hat, make a wizard cape (they use black trash bags decorated with cut shapes of moon and stars), goblins ran the bank and gave out wizard money (chocolate coins) if you answered a math riddle, herbology you planted a magic bean, care of magical creatures made your own small booklet about varous creatures, played quidditch (tossed ball through three giant hoops for a prize), made wands (pvp piping, colored masking tape for handle, center either feather or heat string – sprakly pipe cleaner), made howlers (very cool looking card), made potions, answered riddles at the Weasleys Joke shop for prizes, made owls (out of toilet paper rolls, feathers and pipe cleaners), weather spell wands (from paper towel rolls, filled with rice, with round cutouts from something (not sure could use construction paper too) on the ends attached with rubber band, then decorated with weather symbols), for astronomy lots of telescope to look through and laptops up with cool planets and universe scenes, live owl talk and live snakes and bugs talk, they were some other displays too but I can’t remember all the details – I did jot down lots of notes though to use for the party we have planned.

I got so many cool ideas I can use at my party too – I have so much planned already that I can’t use all the great ideas, but there are some that will be simple and really add some cool touches. For example at the transfiguartion table they had Catnip Tea and Larvettes (not sure of spelling) – a real crunchy snack food – seasoned larvea. Hopefully I can find them. It would add a really cool eeeeewwwww factor to say to the class – now students eat these and see if you transfigure into a bug. hehehe The lady at the care of magical creatures table had an awesome moveable dragon puppet on her shoulder — I HAVE TO HAVE ONE!!!!!!!. :) They had college students dressed as ghosts wandering around with white makeup and light clothing and a sheer white material over them – I can have the adults who are working in the kitchen come out every once in awhile as ghost for our party. They had a sour popcorn at the Weasley’s shop table — they gave out small snack zip locks with some regular popcorn in them, but every once in awhile one would have a very sour piece — we can definitely use that for our party too. They also had magic smoke — tube of it is only $1.99 – its a resin, small amount on the thumb and first finger, tap together creates a puff of what looks like smoke – I plan on getting it to use for the charms class. I love the owls and weather charms – and may use those ideas too. But that would mean collecting a lot of tubes, plus getting glue, feathers, cutting out eyes and beaks, etc. And with all the other stuff I already have going on those two things may be a bit much to add at this point.

This weekend Angelgirl (my daughter) and I worked on the party stuff – we wrapped the wands in tissue paper and added the labels, started making the candy dragon medalillions (big dragon lollipop molds we are not adding the sticks) to use as a handout for everyone who participates in the wizard tournament, put together the Daily prophet door prize bags (HP 2 sheets stickers, 4 bummer stickers, 1 pencil, 2 small keychain books) — everyone will win a bag, but 8 winners will get a statue of a dragon that I found at the dollar store. We also put together a basket of various prizes (small things we had left over and had collected over the past few years like HP trading card packs, star lollipops, snitch pen, extra stickers, etc.) there are 29 items all together so we can throughout the day have a random drawing and call out a name and they can pick something out of the basket.

We tried to make sure that for every event, contest and activity all 24 kids gets something – but what that something is can vary a bit so that there are some bigger prizes like the dragons. Hopefully it will be the right balance of fun and excitment, but hopefully no one will be disappointed since everone will get something.

So needless to say we had a FUN and awesome weekend.

I even managed to get my other blog Diet Pulpit officially open with its first official post. So if you get a chance to pop over and take a look we would love your feedback. There were a few technical difficulties (my apologies Mama Kelly) so it took a bit more work then was planned for but as part of the staff there we are pretty proud of getting it off the ground.

Bright blessings,  Lady Rose
