Harry Potter Fever

Category: Events & Outings | Written by Lady Rose

This is much more then just Harry Potter Fever – it’s overload and insanity!

My house is now officially nicknamed Hogwarts in a Box — the boxes are EVERY WHERE.   (For those new here – I have been planning a HUGE Harry Potter Birthday Party for my daughter’s 11th birthday on May 27th, it has been in the works for over a year now – even rented a hall).

Just when I think I have a lot done, I look at my list and it has grown again with more to dos.  I always forget just how much has to be done at the last minute so it’s always crazy the week before a big event no matter how well planned or previous prep is done.  Luckily I only do something this huge once ever decade (this is my third HUGE event – first was my wedding, second was a 12 course medival dinner for friends as a Yule gift).

This morning (4 a.m.) I made 5 lbs of fudge (with treacle (golden syrup) added) and 36 dragon medallions (made from the candy wafers in various colors using a dragon lollipop mold, without the stick) – these will be given to everyone for participating in the wizard tournament games.

The messenger owls are half done.  I just need to get holes in a few that were to tough to hole punch, and glue on feathers (eyes and beaks went on last night).  Last night I finished the four house bottles and the styrafoam carry – these will be used to count house points (using marbles for the points).

I need to carefully pack up some breakable bottles and things for the potion shop table and other shop decor items.  (The museum display items are already packed:  Dumbledore’s watch, Hermione’s time turner, Mirror of Erised, Sorting Hat, Golden Egg with small dragon inside, and a few other promotional and collectibles).

The nine classes are all done (about 95%) – still some last minute items to tweak.  The 7 shops are 80% done.   I took the last two things to be copied to Staples and a few more wizard & unicorn posters to be laminated too – they should be done tonight.  (I have about 30 posters I think all together, I’ve lost count).  The four tournament events are also 90% done now – just have to find a few items to toss in the box for added decor.

Still to do:  try out the henna (be sure I know how it works) for the face painting table; shop and cook ALL the food; contact all the adult volunteers – check on their costume situation and if they know their role.  Plan a few simple skits — get props (i.e. troll in the kitchen scene; wandering ghosts), find out about helium tank – if it will work on the 5 foot blow up wands (I have a dozen), find out if dry ice store is open next Sunday, make sure all staff have a check list that need one.

I am hoping the firehouse will let us in on Friday next week to bring in the food as we cook it – I have no room in my refrigerator!  And maybe even start bringing in boxes Friday night (might even rent a small u-haul so we can make just one trip – YES there are that many boxes and plastic containers!).  That way all we need to do Saturday is set up tables and chairs and decorate.

SOOOOO…I will be overloaded, insane, slightly stressed and totally enjoying myself this week.  LOL    I may not post much this week – but will definitely be updating after the party and getting pictures up as soon as I can.

Bright Blessings, Lady Rose
