ONLY TWO Days to go before the HUGE Harry Potter Birthday Party, so here’s a menu review and progress report of the preparations.
Last night I got the mashed potatoes done. The rest of the cooking should be fairly simple. Today I’ll put the Quidditch (shepherd’s pie) together (a simple combo of ground beef, gravy, corn (Angelgirl’s pick of veggie) with green mashed (to look like grass) on top – once heated up at the party I have the Quidditch decorations to put on top – they are actually made for a cake, two towers, the three hoops, and even Harry on his broom reaching for the snitch hanging from a thin wire from one of the towers.
McGonagall’s Bat wings, spuds and ears: The chicken wings and small drumsticks (batwings) are an easy bake oven with a yummy sauce (using Angelgirl’s favorite sauce), tater tots will be simple to heat in the oven item, and small ears of corn are just quickly boiled on the stove before serving at the party.
Hagrid’s Toad Stew – Hubby already has this mostly done, it is a very yummy tasty chicken soup with some BIG bones sticking out of it hehehe And we have a large crockpot to serve it in.
Dumbledore’s Triwizard Combo: spirals with fomage are just spiral noodles with a sauce and sprinkle cheese, dragon dogs (hot dogs), and doxy beans (Angelgirl’s favorite brown beans from a can). We were originally going to have mac and cheese – but Angelgirl doesn’t really like homemade mac and cheese, so she asked for a red sauce. It is her party – so of course we made the adjustment.
Sprout’s Hogwarts Greenhouse Greens – bagged salad with cherry tomatoes on the side and several bottles of dressing.
Snape’s Potions – I have 4 pitchers to put some soda in (the soda is free and included in the rental fee at the firehouse since they have a big bar there). I also have 3 glass carafes that I will fill with a flaked jello and koolaide punch mix — which looks really cool, and I’ll pick some odd colors too. (Found the idea in a Halloween cookbook).
The snacks (appetizers) that the kids will have when they first arrive will be fairly easy – the pumpkin cakes and wizard cakes were done yesterday. The rest will be cauldron corn (kettle corn done in the mircrowave); dragon scales with troll booger cheesy dip (multi colored chips with a cheese dip with ground beef in it); forbidden forest crudities (a platter of veggies with a dip – will try making a spider web on top of the dip with a bit of catsup and I have gummy frogs to spinkle amongst the veggies; flobberworm crunch mix – using a big bag of chex mix and I’m adding sour gummy worms.
Beverages:
Butter Beer: root beer with vanilla icecream with a splash of butterscotch syrup
Gillywater: lemonade colored greenish blue served with a fancy toothpick with pineapple chunch and grapes on it
Cherry Soda – served with an umbrella and cherry (just like in the books)
Pumpkin Juice – an orange – mango – orange soda combo with vanilla icecream and orange sherbert on top with a splash of pumpkin syrup served from a punch bowl.
The main obstacle is just keeping up the energy to set every thing up. We will start bringing over the 30 or more boxes tonight and setting up the tables and chairs. I hope to also get the table clothes all set up and if possible the posters. That way the most labor intensive part of the set up is done today, but I don’t know if our energy will hold out that long.
I need to go over all my serving platters – I made a trip to Party City last weekend and got several platters and bowls, but I want to go over it all once more to make sure I thought of everything. I haven’t decide what to do with the hot dog rolls yet – but I might use the two baskets I have the messenger owls in at the shop – since all but a few of the owls will be given away when the kids shop early on, the baskets will empty. So why spend another $10 or more on big black bowl. I also need to hit the dollar store one more time for a few sets of pot holders for the firehouse kitchen, and I may need a few extra serving spoons.
I have my volunteer staff assignments set up – and I’m pretty sure I have everything covered, even one or two of the adults can’t stay the whole day everything will be ok. We even found a school friend of Angelgirl’s to invite because our original two bartender’s and their daughter can’t make it. I told Lian to explain the situation so she would understand why it was such a last minute invite.
It’s getting very exciting around here.
Magically yours, Lady Rose
