I had a chart for each game, so the person running it could call each house in turn and record each players scores. The scores were then totaled and added to the house points. I also used masking tape on the floor to mark the line for each game to toss or throw from. Three of the games are from Oriental Trading. Even though these were very simple and inexpensive games – it was so much fun and the kids really got into doing their best to earn house points.
Wishing Star Ring Toss – 5 rope rings were tossed to try to get them over pegs (that had a star base); decorated the table with star garland and gold cardboard stars.
Haunted Darts – this was a ghost shaped dart board with velco balls, score was based on how many balls stuck. Decorated the table with a string of ghost lights and few carboard cutout ghosts on the wall.
Pumpkin Patch Bean Bag Toss – a wooden pumpkin with bean bags. I had to use a plastic pumpkin with a jar of stones inside to put the pole into so that the game would stay up and steady enough to use on a tabletop. Scored awarded for every bean bag that went into a hole. Decorated with a large, stuffed pumpkin.
Quidditch Snitch Relay – riding straw brooms from point A, players had to keep a styrafoam snitch on a long spoon to point B, from there they tossed four nerf balls into through the Quidditch hoops (in a basket behind three hula hoops). A score was awarded if they didn’t drop the snitch and for each ball that stayed in the basket. Decorated with gold stars and Harry Potter traingle flag banner (flags for each of the houses). This game took the longest, but the houses rotated through the other games while they waited and everyone got a turn. It was worth it because the kids really enjoyed it. While they waited they had a bathroom break and got a bit of snack too.
Outdoors: Find the Snitch – a snitch was hidden outside in the grassy area and the students were told we had just recieved an owl that a snitch had gone astray and may have landed nearby. Since we couldn’t allow any muggles to find it, the student would found it first would be awarded 10 points for their house. The winner also got to keep the snitch (but we didn’t tell them that until after the game).
This gave the kids a chance to run around after sitting in classes for about 2 hours. Also it was a good time to bring out the food so it was “magically” on the serving tables when the students all came back inside.
