Giving Up on a Garden

Category: Life & Family, Mama Kelly's Musings | Written by Mama Kelly

You know what they say about “the best laid plans of mice and men?” Well it applies to Witches too.  Despite my hopes to engage in planting a container garden this year, I have to accept that it is just not meant to be this year.  It is truly a matter of not enough hours in the day, nor days in the week, and my lousy schedule which has me working most Sundays and shortens my weekend with the family.

The original plan was to go buy plants over Beltane weekend – but the girls had their belt testing.  Then I was thinking about buying plans over Mother’s Day weekend, but Sat wound up eaten up by preparing for company (that fell through) and buying Princess Nibbles’ new bike.  This coming weekend is going to be primarily spent playing catch up for having been sick and getting the house tidied for Gamer Dude’s brother coming up the weekend following (that weekend taken up by going to a family anniversary party). And that, my readers, pushes me into June which between my birthday, father’s day, and my daughter’s 8th grade graduation doesn’t leave much time for anything.

The same applies to my fallback plan of canning.  I doubt I will have the time to do the pick-your-own thing often enough to warrant spending the $100 or so on canning supplies (more if I sprung for the pressure canner).

Perhaps it is better to focus on what needs doing this summer – the work necessary to get the girls into their own rooms (while giving up our little living room) and simplfying our lives so that next year I can start living the dream as far as my suburban life allows.  Perhaps it is better to use what energy I have to continue working on the blog – attempting t get its traffic back to its former levels – and other projects that speak to the Witch within as much as the thought of living off the land.

Perhaps the lesson is to accept the gifts in front of me … the friends with whom I have been reunited, the encouragement one of them is giving me to be the writer I dream of being, the extra time afforded by Summer (no homework to check, no class to take), and use them to move toward the transformation I’ve been seeking for so long.

Not as tasty a prospect as homemade jam perhaps, but the peace it has the potential to provide could be just as sweet in the long run.

Blessings

Mama Kelly

Yes, that really does suck through a straw. I laid my garden dream to rest just this week for the same reasons.

I am sorry that you also had to give up the hope of a garden this year. Hopefully next year will allow it for both of us
