As we approach Imbolc I am, as I am every year, reminded of the promise of Spring. This year this reminder brings with it a nudge to start getting my butt in gear in terms of living the life I want as much as possible, right now.
As it will be years (if at all) until Gamer Dude and I have our home in the country replete with the pantry of my dreams and chickens in the yard this means starting to learn the skills I will need a little at a time in the interim.
To that end I am planning to buy pressure canning gear this year, as well as perhaps a dehydrator and a vacuum sealer. And so I ask you, our readers, if you have any suggestions on products, brands, sources, etc. to help me in this goal.
Blessings!
Mama Kelly

As far as dehydrators go, there are a lot of tutorials online that teach you how to make a solar dehydrator. We made one and it works really well as long as we only put it out on warm dry days. I have a friend who made some dehydrating trays that she puts in the back window of her car on days she’s not using it and drys veggies that way.

you can make drying racks and just use the sun. but i do a lot of dehydrating in the winter as well and cannot rely on the sun then so i invested in a BIG 4-5 tray Excalibur dehydrator. it has a square/rectangular shape. having had a round dehydrator in the past, i can say that i prefer this shape more. besides, with the Excalibur, you can use it to make yogurt at home too. the downside is that it is noisy. i’ve had to locate it in my basement so that it doesn’t disturb my light-sleeping husband and son upstairs at night.

i’ve found that the best dehydrators for indoor use have square trays… the round ones look prettier, but have drastically less space on the trays, and sometimes are more difficult to clean as well. Good luck on your preservation attempts!
