Amber is fossilized tree sap. Some 100 million years ago the beads on my neck coursed like blood through a living tree. Alone it is associated with attracting luck, prosperity, prosperity, healing, as well as connection to past lives and spiritual teachers. It is also thought to repel illness. Used since the Stone Age (no pun intended) as decoration, “amber beads have been found in graves over 8000 years old”(Hall).
Jet is fossilized wood. Some many million years ago the beads on my neck stood in a field or a forest, perhaps serving as home to several furred and feathered creatures. Alone it is associated with evoking psychic talents, clearing auric negativity, and working through karmic issues. It can also be used to repel nightmares if worn while sleeping, kept under ones pillow, or hung on the bedpost. It is thought to help dispel both depression and anxiety. Our ancestors polished jet to use it like a mirror, both for mundane and mystical purposes.
In some Wiccan traditions, a necklace comprised of both stones is worn by a High Priestess (a woman having achieved the rank of 3rd degree). Wearing alternating beads of the two are considered a representation of solar and lunar energies, light and dark, male and female, God and Goddess.
Both stones when rubbed with a cloth are capable of generating a small static electrical charge and therefore can be useful for those dealing with low energy. They connect us not only to our own pasts, our own past lives, but our ancestors as well because of their long use in history.
As my regular readers know I was recently treated to a wonderful day out for my 40th birthday, a day which included many (too many) presents. One of my birthday gifts from Lady Rose is a lovely necklace comprised of Amber & Jet beads and a delicate silver waxing crescent moon. It is not only a beautiful piece but a reminder each time I wear it (I’ve worn it almost every day since) that I am a Priestess. It is a reminder that no matter what may be going on around me at home, at work, or just in the world in general that I am connected to the God & Goddess.
Blessings
Mama Kelly
