Ask the Witches – Breaking a Curse

Hello. I have a question and i hope you reply soon. About 29 years ago I made friends with a woman who was a witch but I found out much later. She brought me to her friends who gave me a haircut..my hair was down to my waist and I left with a very short haircut. The hair was not thrown away when I was there. My life has been extremely horrible since then and continues to get worst. Did they use my hair foe a curse?

When it comes to curses, I tend to be on the fence.

As a Witch I believe that spells work, whether they be cast for good or with malice. That, being said I do not believe that they are cast as frequently or as effectively as most “victims” fear. Most of the time someone who believes themselves to be the victim of a curse is more likely to be a victim of circumstance – bad choices, bad luck, bad timing, etc.

However, most of the power of a curse comes from the belief that the victim feeds into it. So, if you believe yourself to be cursed – really truly believe it to be true – then it matters not if someone uttered chants under a dark moon using your hair or nail clippings to bring harm to you. Your own belief that you are cursed will do enough damage on its own.

In cases like these my suggestion is generally to avoid doing any type of curse breaking, but instead turn to a purification and blessing.

Light your bathroom with white candles (in fireproof containers, away from curtains or other flammables) and fill your bathtub with warm water and 3 handfuls of sea salt. If you like you can add several drops of food coloring to tint the water.

Say the following words three times:

Its in the past
Whats done is done
All ugliness there
I now do shun

Sit in the tub and visualize the darkness in your life, past and present, seeping out of your body and leaving a murkiness to the water. Wet every part of your body, even submerging to wet your hair.  Sit until the water becomes uncomfortably cool.

Rise from the tub, exit, and immediately drain the water.  Dry off with clean towels.

Stand and do a self-blessing using blessed salted water. One of my favorites is from A Book of Pagan Rituals ed. Herman Slater. While it is matrifocal, you can easily tailor it to honor whatever pantheon you follow. But anything you are comfortable with will serve the purpose.

Additionally, you can follow this up with a House Blessing as well which should reinforce the feeling of a fresh start.

Blessings to you!

I love this idea its good to just rid yourself of any nasty situation even if it was just a nasty argument/fight with someone, thanks :-)

I just found your blog and love it! I have a question about today’s post. What if you don’t have a tub? I only have a shower and most rituals ask that you take a bath What do you do?

    Michelle –

Good question. If you don’t have a tub you can simply take a nice long shower and rub the skin (lightly!) with handfuls of sea salt.

One thing I keep foremost in my mind is that energy itself is neutral. So, while the intent of a spell may be malicious, the energy itself is not. It has merely been shaped that way.

Having been the target of malicious magic on more than one occasion, (I don’t always play nice with others), I don’t think anything these days of simply accepting the energy thrown at me and reshaping it to my own purpose.

It is no different in principle than a simple cleansing spell that sweeps away bad vibes and replace them with good ones.

And what was meant as a curse becomes a gift.

Personally, I find accepting the energy thrown at me and using it as I see fit is almost always easier (and more efficient) than attempting to deflect or block it.

Of course, that information is only really helpful if a body knows how to do energy work.

great advice – a combination of a personal and house blessing is a smart idea.
