Rites for Candlemas and Imbolc

Category: Pagan Ritual Thurs, Wicca & Paganism | Written by Mama Kelly

Candlemas/Imbolc is traditionally a Sabbat that is associated with purification, as well as initiation rites.

If you don’t have the time or energy for a complete rite it is a fitting time to put up a pot of soup for dinner in the morning and spend the day cleaning and decluttering. At the end of the day you can light a candle and utter a short prayer that speaks to your own devotion to the Gods and to your path.

If you don’t have time or energy for even that …. try and make the time for a self-blessing:

For this you can use consecrated salt water …. or even an annointing oil. Though with the later you must take care with allergic reactions as well as the more delicate areas annointed during this blessing.

For best results it should be done in sacred space, but can simply be done in the privacy of your bathroom after a shower in which extra attention is paid to overall hygeine.

Annoint your forehead

Bless me Mother, for I am your child

Anoint the eyelids.

Blessed be my eyes that I may see your path.

Anoint the nose.

Blessed be my nose, that I may breathe your essence.

Anoint the mouth.

Blessed be my mouth that I may speak of you.

Anoint the breast.

Blessed be my breast that I may be faithful in my work.

Anoint the loins.
Or the spot midway between the groin and bellybutton which correlates to the 2nd chakra

Blessed be my loins (womb/sex/etc.), which brings forth life … as you have brought forth all creation.

Anoint the feet.

Blessed be my feet, that I may walk in your ways.

The words are taken from A Book of Pagan Rituals, Herman Slater (editor) but are generally attributed to Ed Fitch.

If you have more time … consider a ritual similar to those listed here.
